How to get your child to read

Every parent wants his/her child to be a reader. Some children develop this habit on their own and some with little effort from parents can easily master it.

As a parent if you are struggling to inculcate reading habits in your children, you need to first identify the underlying problem with it.

Few of the struggles with the child/parent face can be:-

👉🏻 It sometimes happens that child has not been right phonics knowledge. Does he have issues with fluency of the language ?

👉🏻 Low vocabulary build up can also be the reason for child not wanting to read. It happens that child is only guessing the words in the books because of poor vocabulary skills.

But whatever the cause, if your child feels that reading is too much work, begin by identifying and addressing his areas of weaknesses. As he becomes a better reader, he will enjoy reading much more.

No, you need not need to worry at all. This is no rocket science. Just a few lifestyle changes will help.

What you can do as a parent:-

1️⃣ Make time for reading. Reading should be a leisure and pleasant activity. Don't squeeze reading time between say tuition and dance classes. It would be Like a task for the child.

2️⃣ Make a cozy corner for reading. It should be away from other distractions, especially away from screen time. Comfortable and warm. If this area has A well stocked books shelf of your child's age group category books it would be icing on the cake.

3️⃣ Start Early. If you a mother of a toddler or even younger. Start reading aloud to them. Ideally you should read aloud to children when they are babies. And even when they are in Pre teens you can continue this routine of yours. There's nothing better than bonding over a book.

4️⃣ Play word games with children. Scrabble, word search, magnet letters or any such games. These activities helps in building up good vocabulary which will retain the interest of the child in reading. If a child knows the words he can understand the literature better.

5️⃣ Exhibit a love of reading. When your kids observe that you love to read, they’re more likely to develop a love of reading themselves.
